Making the right choice and taking the necessary steps in order to overcome an opiate addiction can be a difficult thing for anyone. When you are addicted to something like heroin and decide to take the steps to do something about by getting treatment at a clinic, very often you will then be prescribed Methadone as a means of weaning you off of the heroin as part of your treatment. While this method has been used as treatment for a number of years, it is starting to be called into question. Many people are now asking – can someone become addicted to Methadone?

Addiction to Methadone Does Exist

Methadone addiction and overuse has become a big problem in society today, with more and more people citing that they have become addicted to Methadone and more deaths occurring through its overuse. What many may not realize is that Methadone is a powerful narcotic and opiate in its own right, often used for painkillers for those with chronic, serious pain to deal with. The Methadone works to block the receptors to your brain that feel both pleasure and pain, which is why it has been used to help overcome addictions to heroin. The problem is that many users of Methadone find it very difficult to stop using it. They report severe side effects and withdrawal effects when they stop, leading them back to taking the medication again and at higher doses to help get relief. This is what leads to the addiction.

How to Overcome Methadone Addiction

The problem of Methadone addiction has become so widespread that there are many facilities today that provide Methadone detox treatments to help addicts get off of Methadone. Many facilities however, employ treatment that again makes use of other prescribed drugs as part of the detox process in order to stop using Methadone, which just further adds to the cycle of medications used. Some centers are now taking a different approach where they make use of alternative methods of treatment that can help the body and mid of the addict overcome the addiction more naturally and without the use of chemical interference.

The answer to the question can some become addicted to Methadone is a resounding yes. It is a growing problem not just in the United States but around the world, causing many to seek different treatments not just for Methadone addiction but for heroin addiction and any addiction to other opiates as well to avoid the use of Methadone altogether. Finding the safe and successful methods to overcome this problem has begun and there are now pathways to help a person become free of their addictions.
