Opiate addiction can be life destroying, and is extremely hard to quit once the addiction has control of the user. Many addicts try to stop their opiate addiction before they understand what they are facing, and this can make the addiction worse. In addition, many rehab clinics use strong opiates to ‘cure’ addicts of their first addiction. If you would prefer to detox your opiate addiction safely, then you should understand all of the options available.

Detox from Opiate Addiction

Kick Cold Turkey Withdrawal

The  ‘cold turkey’, this is just about the worst way to withdraw from opiates. Cold turkey and stopping the drug completely, and can be extremely painful and difficult. Withdrawal symptoms include cramps, vomiting, migraines, and even seizures.

Tapered withdrawal

This is a better alternative, and can prevent the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. However, it is extremely difficult to control the craving, and for most users is unrealistic. Often it just results in prolonging drug use, rather than quitting.

Rehab Clinics

Most opiate addicts find themselves in some form of rehab clinic eventually. The success rate of rehabilitation from these clinics is very low, and it can be extremely costly, usually running into 10s of thousands of dollars. The majority of people who come home from rehab will start using almost immediately. In addition, rehab clinics often use Methadone or Suboxone, and withdrawing from these opiates is even harder than withdrawing from heroin or narcotics. Holistic drug rehabs are a more successful option but be careful not all holistic rehabs are created equal.

Rapid Detox withdrawal

Called the Waismann Detoxification Therapy, this treatment essentially places patients into a coma for the worst part of the withdrawal, and wakes the addict up 1-5 days later when the symptoms are subsiding. This is a very costly form of therapy, and doesn’t help to treat the cravings or addiction, which is the main problem with opiates. Therapy and counseling is usually required after the coma, and this adds to the cost.

Ibogaine treatments

One of the more novel ways of curing opiate addiction is through the use of a natural compound called Ibogaine. This is a hallucinogenic alkaloid that produces anti-addictive signals in the brain, making it one way to eliminate the cravings which are so strong in opiate addiction. It can cut down on withdrawal symptoms, making them much easier to handle, and many users also say that it eliminates the addiction. Some addicts worry about the risk of taking this substance, but at a medically-backed clinic, recovery should be completely safe.
