It can be baffling to understand heroin addiction. Why would someone voluntarily inject a harmful substance in their body?

There is no question that living with a heroin addict can be painful and difficult. You wanted to help them get clean, but when you see them in inexplicable withdrawal pain, your heart breaks so you give in to their desire to get the next high. Or maybe, you called help and admitted your loved one to a heroin rehab. After weeks, you are happy and hopeful for their future. Then, months or years later you see them pass out in the car because of overdose. You feel frustrated and angry. What is the problem? Why is it so hard for them to just stop! It is not just their relationships and dreams that are at stake here- their own life is at risk too.

To shed some light on your frustrations why it is difficult for an addict to quit heroin, we have gathered the following reasons below and some actionable tips for you to assist your loved one with.

Reasons Why Heroin Addiction is Hard to Stop

    1. People who experienced emotional or physical trauma in the past tend to gravitate towards opiates. The effects of heroin on the user is much more effective than morphine. Heroin becomes their ultimate drug to “check-out” and helps them deal with the pain of unresolved grief.

    1. Dopamine is the chemical compound that the body naturally produces when an individual experience pleasure. Human beings, they say, are dopamine machines because it drives the mind to control the body. When someone wants to have sex, he or she, in fact, wants dopamine. When an addict snorts or injects heroin into his or her own body, he or she expedites the release of dopamine. A lot of addicts would compare the sensation they get from heroin with orgasm only magnified 10,000 more. Being pain-free and the feeling of high are incomparable. Imagine saying to an addict they will never have an orgasm again, do you think they will ever stop?

    1. The ritual of using heroin is addictive. They anticipate locking the doors of their room and turning on their favorite music while they prepare their paraphernalia. It can be habit-forming both psychologically and physically. Your body becomes dependent on these toxins entering your system. Once a person develops a dependency on the drug, he or she begins to experience heroin withdrawal.

    1. Each time an addict decides to stop, he or she will experience excruciating withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms include fever, headache, tremors, hot and cold flashes, pain in the bones and severe discomfort. Heroin addicts think that they can just easily go back to square one, but when they experience the withdrawal symptoms, they would do anything to get cured, and sadly it means another high.

  1. Lastly, laying guilt on addicts does not help. Contrary to the effect you want, it actually enables the cycle of abuse, giving them more reasons to take heroin.
